‘Ticktock’ By Dean Koontz - Book Review.

Dean Koontz is one of my all time favourite writers. For me, he just manages to tick so many different boxes. His writing is poetic with being pretentious, his characters are always colourful and his descriptive skills are fantastic. Not many writers can make a car chase feel as fast-paced and gripping as one you see in a movie, but Mr. Koontz can!

I have now read virtually all of his novels, but one of my absolute favourites must be ‘Ticktock’. This was a big change of direction for Koontz and it was totally unforeseen by many of his readers. He had always had a little humour in his stories, but ‘Ticktock’ was one big living, breathing joke of a book.

It all starts out on a serious enough note; the main character, Tommy Phan, finds a strange doll on his doorstep. It is not long before the inevitable occurs; the doll comes to life and does its level best to kill our protagonist. ‘Oh’, you think when reading the book, ‘it’s going to be a ‘devil-doll’ where he tries locking it in self storage, then it doesn’t work and it all goes wrong sort of story’. But ‘Ticktock’ is far more than just that… it will grip you with its suspense, drag you through scary places and then turn everything on its head when you least expect it.

The less I say about the actual story, the better; I certainly wouldn’t want to spoil it. But if you haven’t read it, then I can tell you that it’s totally different to any of Koontz’s other novels. And if you have an inbuilt sense of the ridiculous (like yours truly), then you are quite likely to fall head-over-heels in love with the leading lady!
